The project road runs north from the district capital town of Karonga in northern Malawi for 45.9km to the Tanzanian border at Songwe. Road M1 is the main North-South arterial in Malawi. The Karonga-Songwe section links Malawi to the important port of Dar es Salaam and as such forms a vital link for importing of strategic goods. Zambia%u2019s Eastern Province especially makes use of this and other sections of the M1 road to obtain the shortest route to the port for import of agricultural inputs and export of agricultural produce. In future the town of Karonga will become a strategic junction town as the construction of the African Union promoted link road between Lakes Tanganyika and Malawi progresses. This road is currently under construction between Karonga and Chitipa on the Zambian border.
