The road is very important for trade, transport and tourism for the East African region. It is located along the Lake Tanganyika. The road is an alternative way toward Dar Es Salaam Port through Kasulu or Kigoma. The works planned are rehabilitation and widening from 6m to 7m. By upgrading of this road, it will be easier for users to reach Kigoma and Dar Es Salaam(TZ), Rumonge and Bujumbura (BDI), Uvira and Goma (DRC), Cyangugu and Gisenyi (RW). Some sections have been updated, studies are going on for others.

The national road 18: Nyakararo-Mwaro-Gitega (56 km) is a missing link of the Central Corridor Bujumbura-Mwaro-Gitega-Kobero (Burundi)/Kabanga-Dodoma-Dar Es Salaam (Tanzania).
Until 2015, the road was still in gravel. From 2016, it is being upgraded and widened from 6m to 7m. The first lot: Nyakararo-Mwaro-Kibumbu (26 km) is completed. The remaining lot: Kibumbu-Mweya-Gitega will also be upgraded with AfDB funds.
Description

<p>RN18 is a 56km road on the Central Corridor along the RN7- RN18- RN16 route and is a conduit for movement of traffic from Tanzania to Gitega and Bujumbura. RN18 requires upgrading from gravel to asphalt concrete and expansion of the carriageway from 6 metres to 7 metres.</p>

Summary
Bugarama-Kayanza road is in a superficial coated belayer last rehabilitation which took place in 1992. Tread has 6 m wide with 1.25 m on each side for the shoulders. It is a stretch of the northern corridor linking Burundi to other countries of the East African Community via Rwanda and Uganda. The Bugarama-Kayanza stretch currently receives almost all the traffic of the central corridor and the northern corridor.

<p>The Kayanza- Bugarama road is about 59 km on the RN1. It originates from Bugarama and terminates in Kayanza City. This road forms part of the trade route with Rwanda.</p>
