Description

The design for the LAPSSET higway components provide for a heavy transportation route from Lamu to South Sudan through Garissa, Isiolo, Kisima and Nginyang to meet the existing Kenya - South Sudan road at Lokichar, from where it continues to the border at Nadapal. The Lamu - Isiolo - Lokichar - Lodwar - Nadapal section measures some 1,256 km. The Northern Branch of the corridor to Ethiopia from Isiolo measures some 470 km, thus the total length of the LAPSSET road corridor is approximately 1,730Km.

Summary
The Lamu port project comes under the Lamu Port and Southern Sudan-Ethiopia Transport (LAPSSET) Corridor's infrastructure projects which include railway lines. The project is located in Manda Bay and to the North end of the Kenyan coast, bordering with Somalia. The project specifically focuses on the development of a master plan for Phase 1 of the regional port capacity and regional rail linkages.
Description

The project scope will cover construction of the first nine deep sea berths at the Lamu Port in Manda Bay to contain Crude Oil and Coal Terminals, General Cargo and Bulk Cargo Terminals.

This may involve some of all of the following activities, i.e. dredging and reclamation; construction of berths and yards; construction of revetment, causeway and road; construction of buildings and utilities; procurement of equipment and tug boats; etc.

Summary

The LAPSSET Corridor will cross the north-eastern part of Kenya, from the port of Lamu to Isiolo in Kenya, and connect directly with South Sudan, via Nakodok, and Ethiopia via Moyale. The project objectives are to:

• Enhance capacities for the transport of people and goods, improving connectivity and trade and fostering economies

• Reduce transport costs and improve the freight transport connectivity

• Trigger private investment and development of industrial parks and logistic facilities/hubs • Improve passenger transport and contribute to socio-economic regional integration.

Construction of a standard gauge railway (2900km) from lines from Lamu to Isiolo, Isiolo to Juba, Isiolo to Addis Ababa, and Nairobi to Isiolo.

Description

Construction of a standard gauge railway (2900km) from Lamu Port in Kenya to Juba in South Sudan and Addis Ababa in Ethiopia i.e. LamuGarissa-Isiolo and branching into two links, the link to South Sudan (Isiolo-Nginyang-Nakodok-Juba) and link to Ethiopia (Isiolo-Moyale-Addis Ababa). Design speed: (Passenger train) 160 km per hour (Kph), (Freight train) 120 Kph, Gauge: 1,435 mm (Standard Gauge). The railway project preliminary designs are complete for the Kenyan and Ethiopian route and expected to proceed to the Detailed Engineering Design stage. The Government Kenya and the Government of Ethiopia have signed a Bilateral Agreement to jointly pursue the development of the LAPSSET Standard Gauge Railway. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between LCDA and InterGovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) to facilitate the financing of this stage though an Infrastructure Project Preparatory Fund (IPPF) available through the New Partnership for African Development (NEPAD).

Summary
The project comprises the inter-regional highway network of
the LAPSSET (Lamu Port South Sudan Ethiopia Transport) Corridor, which has road
components connecting the Lamu Port (Kenya) through Garissa and Isiolo to
Nadapal across the border in South Sudan. It entails the construction of a new highway from Isiolo to
Lokichar. Forming part of the inter-regional highways constructed under the
LAPSSET Corridor programme. The Isiolo - Lokichar section is under Feasibility
Study and Detailed Engineering Design stage.
Description

The Isiolo - Lokichar Highway is 416 km long. A 49 km section is already
upgraded under a separate Isiolo-Moyale project. The section to be constructed
under LAPSSET project is therefore 367 km. Currently no direct road link exists
along the proposed routing, but some segments have unpaved road tracks. The
road will be largely new construction requiring paving, drainage and road
furniture. The road is intended to divert transit traffic from Mombasa Port and
the Northern Corridor via Uganda to Juba in South Sudan.
The design standards adopted are an asphalt paved
single carriageway highway with carriageway width 7m and 2.0m wide paved
shoulders. General design speed is 100 - 120 km/h and maximum gradients 3%
except for 20km mountain section with 60 -90 km/h design speed and 10-12%
gradients. The road section commences
east of Isiolo town, proceeds north along Isiolo Moyale highway for 49km before
branching west at Lerata to Wamba , Baragoi, across Suguta Valley to Lokori and
Lokichar located along the Kitale - Lodwar - South Sudan highway. The road traverses a fairly easy flat to
rolling terrain except for the 20km mountainous escarpment section descending
to the 28km flat floor of the Suguta valley.
The notable bridge structures cross several perennial and dry season
rivers and the Suguta floodplain. The
key junctions are at the intersection with Isiolo-Moyale highway and the
Kenya-Sudan highway where grade separated interchanges are proposed. In order
to cater for future increase in capacity, the road reserve to be acquired for
the project is 100m wide which will allow for construction of a future second
carriageway.
